Republican council hopefuls support small business

GLENOLDEN — The Republican candidates for Delaware County Council discussed their support for small businesses and energy-saving measures at Pfaff Brothers Construction and Alternative Energy Solutions in Glenolden Wednesday afternoon.

Delaware County Council has five members with three openings in the upcoming election.

The GOP candidates include incumbent Tom McGarrigle, a small business owner and former vice chairman of the Springfield Township Board of Commissioners, county Solicitor John McBlain, a former Aldan Borough councilman, and Colleen Morrone, a vice chairwoman of the Concord Township Board of Commissioners and chief mission officer for Goodwill of Delaware and Delaware County.

Court hears appeal on relocating businesses in Tinicum for airport expansion

Should Philadelphia be allowed to buy up property in Tinicum Township to expand the airport and relieve congestions and delays?

On Tuesday, a three-judge panel for the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit heard oral arguments from lawyers representing Delaware County and Tinicum Township, where two-thirds of the airport is located and which oppose the expansion, and the city of Philadelphia.

Council candidates lay out GOP platform

NEWTOWN — The three Republican candidates for Delaware County Council in the upcoming election toured the Newtown Square campus of SAP America Inc. Wednesday to discuss job creation and other economic issues.

“It’s important to bring new jobs and businesses to the county,” said Colleen Morrone, one of the three GOP candidates for county council.

The other two Republican candidates for county council include incumbent Tom McGarrigle, a small business owner and former vice chairman of the Springfield Township Board of Commissioners, and county Solicitor John McBlain, a former Aldan Borough councilman.

Delaware county gets rebate check from PECO

PECO representatives presented Delaware County Council with a $274,255 rebate check Tuesday morning for energy conservation efforts.

County Councilman Thomas McGarrigle said under the Pennsylvania Guaranteed Energy Savings Act, the county was allowed to update facilities with energy-efficient lighting, energy management controls and other equipment, which yielded reductions of a 20-25 percent in energy use and costs.

Representatives from Provident Energy Consulting LLC coordinated an application process under PECO’s Smart Ideas program, which resulted in the rebate, McGarrigle said.

Delaware county towns scrambling to find shelter for stray animals

Almost a year has passed since the Delaware County SPCA warned it would get out of the lost-and-found business as of this summer.

Townships and boroughs that for a century had deposited their stray animals at the Media shelter – as many as 2,000 critters last year and 4,300 the year before – would have to find other accommodations.
